Thanks - looking at the Big Crank batteries for the same year ranges (ETX-16 and ETX-16L), I think I figured it out - the terminals are on opposite sides. Otherwise, they seem exactly the same.
If you buy a current replacement AGM type battery you can enjoy a significant boost on those CCA figures. They are still black and heavy, but battery technology has moved on a lot in recent years.

This is it. The early Softails used a battery with the hot terminal on the opposite side.
I got a big crank too (including the battery)....it was the best price an had 310 cranking amps compared to 270 for most of the similar priced choices.
Yep, Big Crank starting it's 4th season turning a large cube engine but going to replace it for peace of mind. Won't never give Harley $170 although they have good batteries except #2 behind a battery $105 delivered that is better
