Default Cam advance gear

While looking at the cam advance gears for twin cams, I noticed that Woods has one for the cam ($125) and Andrews has one for the crank ($54.05) and is reversible either +4 or -4 deg. Would one install the Andrews on the -4 deg on the crank to advance the cam?

Thanks for the help

Are you sure -4* at the crank will advance the cam timing??

That is where my confusion lies. When the gear is installed with +4* does it make the adjustment of moving the cam timing forward or is it based on the crank position. I maybe overthinking this, lol. Just want to make sure that the Andrews does advance the cam timing not the crank. In my reading Andrews makes the Woods advance gear but it is pricy.

When taking readings, you measure the crank in degrees of rotation at a giving cam lift ( .053" ). the cam is goin to stay in same place and the crank is going to move 4*

Senna thanks, I am not sure I understand this thing. My thought is that the cam operation would be initiated 4* earlier in the sequence thus building a little more compression and torque. If the crank is moved 4* in advance the the cam sequence begins later thus losing some compression and low end torque. I could be misunderstanding this whole thing. Andrews might have machined the the sprocket so it drives the cam sequence to move earlier in relation to the crank position. Again thanks for everyone's help, I'll try to give Andrews a call to make sure my understanding is correct.

You have it right. Retarding the crank 4* is the same as advancing the cams 4* and visa versa; corrected CR and CCP are inreased which will move the TQ curve about 250-300 rpms to the left. Just the opposite will occur if the crank rotation is advanced 4*.

In one case the intake valve closes 4* earlier ABDC capturing a larger volume of A/F which increases compression. In the other case the intake closes normally, however it the crank rotation is retarded 4* the piston passes BDC 4* later and the same thing happens; larger volume of A/F is captured.

DJL thanks for the help. It get confusing when when you have two products that do the same thing, but are assembled on different parts of the engine. Andrews was pretty smart engineering the dual purpose gear, especially for less $$$.

Thanks again
