Default installing new cam issues

I have a 95 fxdwg with a 1340 I'm replacing the cam that was in the bike with the same cam that's was in the bike and having issues setting cam clearence. The bike has a EV-46 Andrews cam. I am replacing the cam tappets because I had a leaking cam seal. I decided to take off the cam cover to see why the leak started in the first place I noticed a few of the lobes were wooped like san paper was ran over them lightly. The bushing aslo was loose inside the cam cover when I took it out. So I got a new ev-46 cam and S&S tappets. Plus a new cam cover. I pressed the old gear off the old cam and pressed it onto the new cam. When I put everything back together I used the trust washer that was in there and a .45 shim that was with the old cam. I couldn't even ge3t a .05 feeler gauge between the shims. Am I checking in the right area and do they may smaller shims than the .45 . Any help would be appreciated

If you can establish .005 end play, checked with feeler guage between the cam spacer and end of the cam, that is adequate. I don't have a parts book here, but I think .045 is the thinnest spacer and if you need more end play, you would have to surface grind the spacer at a local machine shop. If you try to move the cam inward and outward, by hand, you should be able to feel perceptible end play, if you can, you have enough. If not experienced though, stay with the feeler guage.

I reach through the lifter block and can't get the cam tp move but I haven't tried putting the bolt in the end of the cam yet and moving it that way. Thank you

My original cam cover was shot so I got a drag specialties cover. I'm having second thaughts about using that cover. May return it and get the S&S cover.

Was thinking of getting one from Harley but it doesn't come with the bushings sized.
