engine is junk and wondering does a 96 fit in place of an 88 or are they different mounts?

you can certainly fit a 96 in there. the difference between the two motors is the crank and stroke is longer on a 96. Before you venture into this too deep call Scotty at Hillside Cycle to get more educated information on what your options are. Depending on the price and condition of the 96" you're considering Scotty might be able to provide more affordable options for you. The guy is a wealth of knowledge....

oh yeah.. the transmission casings are different too.
