Default PITA Rocker Box Allen Bolts

So, getting ready to get in to the rocker boxes on my 14 SGS for the first time to do some things, and I come across these little suckers. Left side rear jug. Somebody put them in while this motor was still in the frame, and I can get them out with a little work, but how am I going to torque these to spec? 3/8" drive dog bone with 1/4" box end and a stub off of a 1/4" allen wrench? That's all I got. If so, I guess I need to get some dog bone torque adapters huh........ Anyone else got a better way/plan??

Yup, those are a PITA to remove, but I've done it 5 times, different bikes. I've always just tightened those particular bolts by hand. (Insert sound of Engineer's heads exploding, lol)

They sell a special wrench for exactly that I've seen on Amazon and a couple other sites and I've also seen guys on here cut an allen wrench down to fit using a wrench. Like said above if you get either I would think you'll be fine torquing by hand for the torque spec isn't that high. I don't have a manual in front of me for the exact torque spec so check your service manual first.

Amazon Amazon

Thanks for the link. I've seen those wrenches around, and may get one.Getting the bolts out will be a slight pain without it, but I can get them out ok with what I have here in my shop, I just want to see if there is a specialty tool, like a dog bone, to torque these to spec easily enough, or if I have to use the click setting in my wrist. 15-18 ft. lbs.....

Remove the bolts at the same time you pull the cover off. Like pull them as a unit (the ones that won't fit past the frame). I would be doing the dog bone and cut off allen key method for proper torque.

You can cut off a 1/4 inch allen wrench to get a stub that sticks up, then use a offset double box ends and a fish scale to torque the bolt.

Fish scale LBs will be TQ spec x12 / center to center distance on the wrench.

Say the spec is 10 ft-lb and the wrench is 6 inches. 10x12/6 = 20 lb.

I'm with pure-hybrid, ARP bolts.

Yup, 12 pt. ARP bolts....... next time, which isn't in the too distant future when I get back from this next trip. It's really close to time for an upper end refresh/upgrade.

I ended up doing a few practice torques with the torque wrench vs the Snap-On ratcheting 1/4" hex allen wrench with the cut off allen stub in it. Use that wrench on all 12 bolts to make them all the same. I feel pretty good with that and after all, it's only the rocker cover. I'm sure it will be fine until rebuild time. Might need to buy a fish scale though, lol.......
