What do you think? Can this be honed out or should we go oversized?

To me that whole cylinder looks funky.
I'd be looking at a bore job. That looks beyond a honing job to me.

Between the lines and the speckling you need to bore. It looks like there has been moisture in thecylinders causing the speckling marks. Otherwise I don't think you will ever get the rings to seal.

That is a lot of wear and tear for 55k. I'm no expert at this, but those don't good at all. Was it making noise?

Not my bike. However I ride with this fella a lot and I never noticed anything unusual. No smoke or anything like that.

Can .002 or .005 over rings be used with std pistons or does he need new pistons

Matched pistons & rings, those are showing signs of chattering at the 10-2 positions in those cylinders, trying to monkey rig it at this point is opening up the possibility of chipping the already warped piston skirts. I suspect they have been hot too judging from the glaze I see.
