The cylinders need to be straight and round for rings to seal properly, and hold up over time. And by the time you had cylinder anywhere nearly round and straight, the current pistons would be lose enough that they would knock. It's simply not worth the effort. Bore the cylinders and replace the pistons and rings. And, with that many miles, the heads need to be reworked to include a valve job and stem seals.
Depending no what has been done previously, and when, it is likely time to open the cam chest and upgrade components like cam chain tensioner shoes and lifters as well as anything else that is worn beyond specs. Oil pump?
