Default Has anyone seen this kind of CAM Lobe Wear?

I bought an 07 Deuce, very custom, with a Screamin Eagle 120R motor. I love this bike, beautiful. But it made some noises I didnt like, and needed a little suspension TLC. While it was down for the other repairs, I decided to do all the gaskets I could, and throw in some rocker lockers to quiet the valve train. While I was in there, I decided to inspect the things I could, and this is what I found:

Lifter 1

Lifter 2

Cam 1 Lobe 1

Cam 1 Lobe 2

I saw no metal shavings, nothing else has any suspicious wear, and the motor looks great. I have no idea what could have caused this. Has anyone seen this kind of damage? Is this an oil delivery issue or fluke? I ordered new parts, will be installing this weekend. SHould I worry?

THanks guys, and glad to be a new member!

I’m not an expert, but I’ve stayed in a Holiday Inn Express. So, I’ll offer my opinion..that don’t look good. How many miles ya got on the motor?

Wish I knew. Motor was installed in 2010 based on order and paperwork, but bike has 65k miles on it. So likely somewhere between 35k and 55K?

Mine didn't look like that at 83,000 miles. (Only the coating was worn off.) But nothing pitted like that.

This is the SE 120R, so very high lift cam SE266E (.660 lift). I would expect it to be a little beat up, but not like this. Moving forward, I plan to inspect lifters every 15k, replace them every 30k. Maybe thats optimistic, lol. Bike will have 100k on it by then, and probably need a new crank.

Eeewwwwww, i’ve seen it on the small block 350 before, someone correct me if I’m wrong, it almost looks like you didn’t have enough spring seat pressure on your springs and you got low on oil

Probably needs a new crank now. What caused it? Harley Davidson. Maybe you didn't find any metal shavings but they're in there somewhere...like the bearings. Hoping to see 100k on that motor without any problems is very optimistic. Hopefully when you ordered new parts they weren't out of the screaming eagle catalog. Only one hd motor has a worse reputation than the 110 and thats the 120. Not trying to be beat you up ,I really do hope it works out for you...good luck

IMO it`s a failure of the surface hardening on the cam lobe.
Been seen here on various engine models and cam brands

With a high lift cam I`m discounting the "insufficient spring pressure" I expect it has VERY strong springs and this accelerated the failure

That's why HD won't give any warranty on their SE120R motors!
