Default 2001 Dyna 95" SE203 Cam Opinion

My nephew just purchased a very nice 2001 carbureted Dyna Low Rider with 14,000. Engine mods are 95" with SE203 cam, stock heads and SE 2 into 1 exhaust. All mods were installed at the dealer ship but my gut tells me the carb may not be jetted properly.

My question is should we change the cam before we dial in the carb? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

If you set the carb for the current build and then change the cam, you will be rejetting the carb after the cam.

My question was should I get rid of the 203 because its a turd and go with something else. I am looking for suggestions instead of the 203. I've installed the SE204, Andrews 26 and 37 but its been at least 15 years since I rode a 95" stage 2. I'll tweak this setup and let him ride for the summer then maybe include head work and a cam.

Cam choice with stock heads is lift limited to .510"; stock springs can't handle more. If wanting to dump the SE203 (just needs more than stock compression) S&S 509 would be a good bolt in operation. As Ed says, change cams first, then tune the carb; probably needs a bit more main but needle will be important for partial throttle response. Get some .025" SS washers to raise needle, go to the lighter spring and open up the vacuum port to 1/8". Check the A/F adjustment to see if it has been opened up and used before.

I have a set of S&S 509 cams available to me but I think the compression of the 95" big bore kit that included the 203 cam already installed is 10.2.

If the BB kit was the HD kit with flat top pistons, no way is static CR 10.2; more likely about 9.4. Run a compression test; bet a six pack CCP is between 170-180psi. If static is 10.2, CCP will be between 190-200psi depending on head gasket thickness and elevation. You need to know from where you are starting before selecting a cam.

Thank you very much for that information. Much appreciated...

I had a 2003 Road King that I ended up doing a 95” with Andrews 26’s. That thing was a fricken beast. It came on strong down low, but held on high. I could easily do a 30-50’ patch of rubber.

that combo you have is a nice one, i cant see from the picture, but is the baffle in that pipe? if it is, i would try to dial in the carb correctly and ride it and see how you like it. if the baffle has been removed, that is where you start, either re install it, (there are a couple of modes that i rememebr for that one) and see how it rides, that pipe with no baffle and no big engine work will kill it's performance, or get a pipe you plan to keep (and maybe have room to grow with) and start from there. if you're dead set on a cam change, that's cool, but if you're pipe is no good, most everything else wont be either.
