Default Wondering which sportster engine is the best

I'm building my first bike and I'm trying to decide which engine to use. I want to use a sportster engine because the engine and tranny are a single unit. I got started building a 69 ironhead a couple years back and I loved the simplicity of it, but parts were difficult to find and stupid expensive. I learned that anything before 71 was like that. There was a lot I liked about it but I realize I don't have a lot of experience. Would love any input on which engine the mechanics prefer. Please consider availability of parts, cost of parts, reliability, and simplicity. Thanks for any opinions.

Unless your start with a complete bike to rework a piglet isn't a good choice for a first build, aftermarket parts are on the slim and expensive side for one.

You can't go wrong with the Sportster version of the Evolution - according to Wiki starting in 1986. Anything with solid state ignition, electric start and a carb is alright with me.

I planned on buying a complete bike and transferring it to a rigid frame.

Out of curiosity, what's the advantage to going this route as opposed to just starting with a 1200? Higher compression pistons?

2000-2003 would be the pic of the litter, all the upgrades done, solid bike. I owned a 2002 sport it was a great bike, but probably not what you want to chop up. If you plan on building the motor then a 883 maybe your best bet. Just make sure you get it cheaper than a comparable 1200. Performance upgrades have come a long way for the little sporty and then can really scream with the right combo of parts.

wondering the same. seems silly and creates unnecessary work.

i guess you would know it has good/fresh rings matched to the bore after punching to 1200 vs rehabbing a 1200. ... then you'd be faced with regearing or a dealing with rev happy 1200 (nothing wrong with that)

Some prefer the 883 heads when it comes to porting. Also some like the lower gearing for stop light adventures. I would say the cheapest route to performance would be the xb heads or 2004 up 1200 heads. Depending on level of performance one desires. Also the appeal seems to come at the lower price point you use to be able get them for, but if your looks at a bike as old as 2003 and later the price difference is minor
