Porting Heads Question

I'd guess not much bang for buck. Ive been told by a few head porters the same with my cams. Not to say it wouldn't help but both guys said a cam change would produce way better results for the added price of cams.

In the racing world, the saying goes, "It's all in the heads."
But since I have no personal experience on HD heads, your mileage may vary...as another saying goes.
It is a fact that you can put a b!tchin' set o' heads on a crappy shortblock, and the thing will run hard. Then put a set of unported stock heads on a really b!tchin' shortblock and it just won't live up to its potential.
There's always a trade-off though. Up-stairs power will come at the cost of some low-end torque if you go too far.
On my own deal, I'd be inclined to get some head work done before going big on the lower end.

You have the 48 cams which I assume were chosen because you wanted increased low end and midrange above all else. What do you expect headwork to give you and where in the rev range?
Headwork on a stock 96 engine with 48 cams is an unusual combo that none of the big shops do so read into that what you will.
If the heads come off, that's be the time to bore the cylinders and add new pistons. Missed opportunity otherwise.
Cost of headwork v going big bore?
Also consider when heads come off for either work or big bore work, compression is often increased for performance but in your case this wouldn't suit your 48 cams.
I wouldn't do the headwork myself. I'd either leave it as it is or go the full hog and do headwork along with big bore and cam change.
