Default Cost of engine work if I buy 2006 FXDL with 40,000 miles?

I'm interested in this 2006 FXDL at a Harley dealership. It has about 40,000 miles on the bike. When will the bike need motor work usually? Usually what kind of motor work would it need, and roughly what would it cost? They're asking $8,900 for the Harley. Is there any issues on the 2006 motor?

Thank you.

8900 is too much for an 06. You can get a 2012 for that price here in San Diego. If you are set on the 06 offer $6 to 6.5k.

Twin cams have been known to go well over 100,000 miles if properly taken care of. If it needs it, a new top end re-freshening will run you about $1000 or so. Ask the dealer if the cam chain tensioners have been changed out, they usually start to go south @ 30,000 miles, if they say they don't know, walk away from it. Bikes worth $6,500-7 as it sits.

How were those 40k miles put on?

Answer that and you will have your reliability question answered.

I see you're in Canada so i can't comment on what it's worth up there. The tensioners are the only thing i would worry about.

40,000 Miles is not that high a mileage if was taken care of properly my 2 concerns would be the Cam Tensioners and Possibly the Inner Primary Bearing ..

As with most HD's the problematic area is in the cam chest area.
The cam chain tension shoes should be eyeballed and attended to.
If the engine has good, equal, compression, and if a leakdown test is performed and all seems well, ride it and have fun.

Price is probably in line for being in Canada...check tensioners and go. Find yourself a nice independent shop. Gotta be some near you or Toronto/ North York or Scarborough area for sure.

My 2003 has 35k miles and is running better than ever. But I have a good mechanic and have it serviced religiously . I had the SE Cam Chain Hydraulic Tensioner Upgrade done at 30 k.
***** you seem to be having a hard time finding a decent bike. Why don't you go to some dealerships and find a salesman you like, tell him what your looking for, and let him find you a bike?
If this bike has good maintenance records, pay a mechanic to check it out: http://toronto.craigslist.ca/mss/mcy/5595043044.html

Ask for a compression test and the other items suggested here. Offer less, go from there. Don't get fixated on that bike. Others will come your way. That price is not great. Yd
