Default burned pistons, what happend?

So after a couple of years a friend needs new pistons. He got a 96-103 SE kit and dont know what wrong but you can see them in the attached pictures.

He also wants me to get him a good replacement. I was thinking of a Wiseco TC 103" BIG BORE .010" 10.5:1 (VT2756), what do you guys think Any idea what went wrong or what could be needed to prevent it from happening again???

Looks like some type of fuel additive to me. Octane boost, stabil ??? They are not even stained before the first ring showing next to no blow-by. Thats not a burned piston. Just build up. Back when we had leaded fuel, the carbon build up would grow and grow. When unleaded fuel came along, it only gets so thick and flakes off unless you loose oil control with worn ring width gap or bad valve seals. Then the oil will coke and stick. That really does not look like oil coke unless someone tried to blow it out wiht a lot of H2O spray which could happen in a heavy rainstorm with an open SE filter. This is what a steady stream of water will do. I had a head gasket leak on my Camaro. Drove it for quite a while till it broke the starter one morning.

Vent the crankcase somewhere other than the air intake.

1) So is this just something to throw away and get new ones or can something be done?
2) I was thinking of a Wiseco TC 103" BIG BORE .010" 10.5:1 (VT2756), is this a good replacement?
3) with an autotune power commander will he prevent this from happening again?

PS:
Please take me easy since I dont know 100% the tech on this type of engine problems or parts.

Here's an old thread, Check pg 4 photos and see if they look familiar.
Especially the ones from DK Custom down the page.

There looks like pitting inside the piston bowl. There also looks like what ever fuel was burned sat and boiled on top of the piston. Lots of build up was engine running rich for a long period of time? Was he running ethanol in this motor?
