Default 4th gear @42mph?

2008 Heritage..3000miles my first Harley. On a level road at about 42 mph in 4th gear I get an exhaust popping sound /behind the power curve. Does this slight popping sound so any engine damage? I shift down immediately if I enter an incline. Comments please.
Thanks, wicker in San Antonio

That sounds a bit slow to me, however if you don't have an owners manual, to check engine revs and road speeds, you may be able to download one from the H-D website. Go to the Owners tab.

As for the popping, what mods if any does your bike have? Changes to air filter or exhausts can do that, if fuelling isn't adjusted properly.

After reading this thread the other night - I decided to check out my speed and RPM on the way to work. I have a 30 T sprocket but on my bike 4th gear and 42 MPH is lugging it. Sorry don't remember the exact RPM.
