Default Harley "A" Cam in '02 Fatboy FUEL INJECTED....

I've tried to research this but the only thing I can find is the "A" cam was for carb bikes and the "B" cam was for FI bikes. from 1999 to 2003.

Problem is I took my dad's 2002 Fatboy apart to change the tensioner shoes. The cams are stamped "A" on the end. So did he get the wrong cams at the assembly line? It doesn't matter much but we are considering a cam swap and would like to know where we are starting. The "B" has a slightly higher bump in compression than the "A".

Don't have an answer on the "wrong cam" question but that sort of thing happens all the time. At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter where you are starting from; what matters is where you are going. There is only 3 psi difference in CCP between the "A" and "B" OEM cams, so don't waste any time worrying about that; drop in an S&S 509 or Redshift 525 and roll on.

I just ran that cam through the calculator on big boyz. WOW quite the compression bump! The added lift to boot. Makes me want to try that cam in my 95 inch Electra glide running 21's currently.

Djl, you got my wheels turning on my own bike. Mine is a 99 with 95" flat tops, 82cc heads, tw21 cam. It made 80 Hp and 98 lbft and runs really well. 9.2:1 corrected comp.

Do you think the 509 in my bike would be a worth while change? I was running slip ons and just put on a VH Pro Pipe but cannot rude yet due to winter. The 509 looks more attractive than the 21 but wasn't well known when I did my build.

Compression would bump to 9.49:1 And I would gain .011 in valve lift. I DO have compression releases.

Yeah, the 509 hasn't been around that long, 3-4 years maybe, IIRC; not sure. I hesitate to tell another forum member whether or not a particular motor modification would be "worthwhile"; very subjective. If I had change the TW21 cam for the S&S 509 in a 95" motor; I would not hesitate to share the results but I haven't. A solid 95" motor should hit mid 90s HP and 100" TQ. If I were in you situation, I would be looking at headwork as the next upgrade; that's what is holding your HP down. The Pro Pipe will help your current numbers a bit but a set of high flowing heads is what you need. A set of take off OEM heads from '06 up, set up for whatever can you choose, without porting would make a big improvement and open up cam selection to many more cams as the beehive springs in the later heads can accommodate up to .600" lift.

Not trying to discourage you from swapping the 21s for the 509s but suggesting another path that will produce much better results.

I realize I am pushing the potential of the stock heads but I'm not really looking to add much horsepower per se. I guess I'm just thinking with the added compression it would add in the lower end torque. I'm not sure how much the added lift would help because the stock heads are probably limited out on the benefits where I'm at now at. 498. I rarely ever see 5000rpm so if I had Say 110 lbft of torque at say 4000 rpm I would be happier than gaining 10 horsepower at 6000 rpm. I did call S & S and they said 9. 65 static compression would work with the 509. it's very tempting to try it I just don't make enough money to waste it if it will not be any difference lol
