Default HQ 34 vs 39 cams

Thinking about trying some different cams - want torque to kick in sooner than what I have now. I have a 95" with around 10.2:1 compression. Headwork was done (1.900 intake/1.610 exhaust) and heads flow about 248 cfm at 28", but I still have stock springs for .510 lift. Stock throttle body was ported to 48mm and have high flow injectors. Exhaust is supertrapp 2-1.

I would really like to go with the 39 cams, but am wondering what expected power difference is between the 34 and 39 to decide if pulling heads and extra $$$ is worth the power gain. I would think the 34's would run strong with the headwork I already have, but am a little concerned about compression. If I get a good tune, the compression should give a strong bottom end. Doug at HQ told me he has run 34's at 10:1 with no issues. Compression tests show 199psi front and rear - I would expect similar compression with the 34's, as current cams have a 40 intake closing with a 4 degree advance key. 34's have a 36 intake closing.

I used the 0039 in my last bike, a 05 flht that was a 95" with ported heads. It made great tq and pulled very hard, if I remember right it made 111 pounds of tq at about 3500 rpm. I think the 0039 had a intake closing of 36, I ran it at just under 10 to 1.

Blue,
Thanks - seems everyone that had 39's say great things about the power. If my heads were set up with proper springs, I would go with 39's with no hesitation. Wondering how close 34's are to see if I want to spend money on more headwork. Where did power and kick in with 39's? What kind of heads and headwork did you have done?

Heads where done by a local guy with stock valves just cleaned up the ports and changed the springs. The cams would kick in around 2800 rpm and pull all the way up. Don't have any experience with the 34's so can't help you with how they match up, but if you got the cash to do the heads I would go with the 0039.
