Default Wiring Harness Compatibility

Hey all, so a slightly odd question but my slightly odd bike gives me the need to ask it!

So I have a 2003 FXDWG that when I purchased it was advertised as having had a 'conversion to EFI'. As it turns out it was a little more than that, at some point in the bikes life it has had its engine replaced with a 2012 103ci from a Softail, still running on the original 5 speed transmission. Everything works just great, but the wiring loom has been chopped and spliced so much that its pretty much impossible to work out what is what and recently I have been having some issues with the motorcycles lighting, especially in the rear.

What I would really like to do is just rip the whole rats nest of a loom out and start again fresh....unfortunately I am not finding any 2012 Softail complete wiring looms out there for purchase on eBay etc. so I am wondering if anyone can tell me if I can use a loom from another model from the same year/engine type. I have found a loom for a 2012 FXDWG, which 'looks' like it would fit...but is that really the case.

I know this is an odd question and may sound dumb, but any advice would be greatly appreciated

Go to this site and enter your year in the search box upper right then click on electrical drawings. https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson.com
Looks to me if your bike started out with a carb and was changed over to EFI someone must have added an ECM, (i don't see an ECM in the Carb schematics).. I would try to get a part number from the ECM and find out what year it was and start from there. Any chance they added a BCM too, the 2012 would have a BCM and CAN Bus wiring.

If it runs good have you thought about cleaning up the previous work?

A 2012 Softail case in a 2003 Dyna frame mounted to a 2003 5 speed. Not buying it. You should post a few pics of the drivetrain.

No need to buy it, I'm not selling it! Its a fact

Below is a picture of the bike, I know that the engine and wiring are from a 2012 Softail because I installed an FP3 when I added the new pipes and air filter. The bike does have CAN wiring and obviously an ECM.

I do not believe you have what you think you have. I believe that someone switched the throttle body to the 2006 and later and cut connectors for the sensors and injectors. Maybe they took heads off a 2012 but not the engine. That is not a 2012 Softail engine mated to a 2003 Dyna transmission and frame.

Stop looking for a 2012 Softail harness. At best you would restore the 2003 Dyna harness and purchase adapters to convert from early Delphi to later Delphi for throttle body and connectors.

All I have to go on is what I can see and analyze. The ECM is from a 2012 Softail, checked that by both part number and as said before the FP3 recognized the 'brain' as being that. The transmission is definitely a 5 speed from a 2003 because I replaced parts of this myself recently when the mainshaft crapped out. As you can see from the frame (and the VIN # confirms) this is a 2003 Dyna frame.

But then wouldnt there be an issue with the wiring harness and the ECM? That is definitely from the 2012 softail

If it's really running on a 2012 Can Bus system, you are correct.

That is one thing I am absolutely sure of, The Can Bus shows as a 2012 when hooked up to the FP3 and I also checked the Can Bus part number and it comes up on the HD parts store as a 2012 bus
