What was drawing was the starter engaged on the flywheel. If you rode all the way home and when you tried to start it never clicked, it was engaged the entire time. The rotation of the engine/flywheel should have disengaged it. I would inspect the starter chances are you may have damage. Don't want to be left in the middle of nowhere.

Default Engine will not turn over

That certainly sounds possible but I stopped twice before arriving home and shut bike off both times and it started each time. Would the starter not disengage the flywheel each time?? I certainly don't want to be stranded over this. This is my main source of transportation. How much to replace the starter ?

Yea the starter was locked on the ring gear. I would pull the primary and see what is going on, look for any debris any thing that could get stuck between the two, anything loose, etc.

Even if the starter pinion gear was stuck in the ring gear, the starter solenoid electrical contacts would not stay connected, the solenoid shaft is two piece, not like the older shovelhead solenoid.

You are quite correct, I was just referring to the pinion gear stuck on the ring gear not allowing proper operation, but still allowing draw when the switch was pushed. I would still expect some damage to one or the other.
