Tech zone subject for 8/16: Proper Re-Usable Air Filter Cleaning
Today's subject is taking it back to the basics. Just like playing sports its always good to review the basics even if you think you know.
Most of you when adding exhaust have or should upgrade to a Stage 1 Air Filter set up. They use a High Flow re-usable air filter. So instead of relying on the technician that services your bike to change it, you yourself can clean and oil the air filter when it becomes dirty. K&N Recharge kits are the most popular, they include the cleaner and oil in easy to use aerosol form. Arlen Ness also makes what they call "Filter Tune-UP Kit" one with Red Oil and one with Clear for Stainless & Black filters. I personally have used these type of filters in my truck, off-road, and Harley applications. A couple things that I learned in my words:
1. Spray the cleaner on inside and out, wait 10 minutes.
2. Rinse with water from the inside to the outside, this makes sure the dirt is pushed out through the outer part of the filter instead of to the inside. This step is very important.
3. Air Dry naturally, do not force dry with a fan or air hose.
4. Lightly Oil the outside and let soak for 20 minutes, check to make sure the coverage is even, if not apply to light areas and let soak again.
5. Clean off excess oil on rubber / metal areas.
6. Install
Here is the links to written and video instruction from K&N to properly clean your re-usable air filters:
