If everything is stock, might want to try: 2 into 1 exhaust, air filter that breathes, cams, headwork, re-jet and dyno tune. You'll want to look at a package that works well together and not just cobble parts together.

All depends on what you are looking for and the obvious, $$$. There are sponsors here that can also assist you.

42mm Mikuni, Screaming Eagle heads, cams (can't remember what they are) 6200 rpm ignition, k&n filter and Thunderheader. Makes it a very fun bike. Great power and improved mileage.

i have the Mikuni HSR 42, runs great right out of the box, and my bike 2002 FXD has the SE pipes and S&S air cleaner and SE203 cams, nice responsive carb plan to have it dyno'ed some day

if you say 42 mm gets you more power would it be safe to assume that 45 mm would just be better and more power

Depends on the displacement on the bike. Google mikuni and call tech support. they can give you the heads up on the best set up for your bike. They were great with me and went out of there way to make sure I got the right set up. I used a Mikuni HSR 42 on my heritage before I got the dyna .. great carb.

42mm is plenty good for an 88 or a 95inch motor, if your running a 100inch motor then the 45mm would be a better choice

That would not be a safe assumption. Like missedem said, call Mikuni tech support to find out what's best for your bike. If you "over carb" your engine with too large of a carb diameter for the engine displacement, the intake velocity will slow down, and your engine will make less power than with the smaller, correct sized carb.
