Default Check engine and battery light on

My son was riding today and the check engine and battery light both came on. Pulled over and shut it down. Tried to restart it and it wouldn't start. Fortunately he was close to home and walked home and got a different battery. Replaced the battery, it started, but both the check engine and battery lights stayed on. He rode it home. What should we be looking for? It is an '06 Streetbob. I searched the previous threads and found something similar, only it was on a '12 Touring bike. Thanks for any help.

Glad you got it figured out...that is exactly what my SG did about 18 months ago and this test led me directly to the shorted out stator...fortunately for me, I purchased an extended warranty with it so I took it to the dealer and had the stator and VR replaced under the extended warranty.
