Default 21" rim for 98 dyna

I've heard that a 00 and later 21" rim from a sporty can be put on a 99 or older narrow front end (like my 98 superglide) using a 00 and up rotor. Is that true? would i have to change my caliper ormount? i thought it was an axle diameter difference between 99 and 00. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The axle size change happened in 2003 to 2004. 2003 and earlier has a 3/4 inch diameter axle. 2004 and later has a 1 inch axle.

Actually the 'Sportster' has nothing to do with the fit of a 21 inch rim on your bike, other than the fact that most 21 inch wheels that have a narrow hub are to be found on a Sporty.
You can put a 21 inch rim on your present hub if you like. You just need to buy the correct length spokes for the wheel build. That way there is no problem with checking to see if there is a disc spacing conflict. Just bolt it in after the build. See Buchanan or J&P Cycles for the spoke info.
If instead, you want to buy a Sportster wheel with a 21 inch rim, then check to make sure the hub length thru the Sporty wheel is the same as yours and that the center to center bolt spacing on the disc matches what you now have on your machine. I bet that you will find everything the same dimension(s)......pg

yeah, rim was the wrong term to use.. maybe wheel would be more appropriate. i was looking buying a usedwheel on ebay, and some models of sportsters came with 21" wheel assmeblies... where the only dynas with 21" were wide glides... which obviously havedifferent hubs. one of the rims was advertised as an 00 and up sportster/dyna (all but WG) wheel but said it would fit 99 and earlier dynas with the use of a later model rotor. just didn't know if this was acccuarte, maybe its the bolt pattern of the rotor to the later model hub? unfortunately because its on ebay i don't really have the chance to look and measure and mock it up, but maybe i can ask the seller to do some measuring. thanks for the info.

Just ask the seller to measure a pair of the disc center to center bolts. I am sure it will be the same as yours.
I needed a hub to build my 21 inch wheel as my Dyna came with a cast wheel. I bought a Sportster 21 inch wheel on ebay, simply to obtain the needed hub. Before I tore it down to relace with an aluminum rim & SS spokes I installed it on the Dyna to check the fit. Everything fit perfectly, using my disc off the cast wheel on the Sporty hub.
I expect yours will be the same.
A couple of pics are shown here........pg
