I'm running a 190 on 5.5" wheel, stock is 4.5, a buddy is running a 190 on a 6" wheel. Plenty of room, just need wiring tucked up well. As far as the height, imo the stock tire already looks silly with the huge mud truck sidewall, and the bike would feel really down on power trying to turn a taller, heavier tire.

Plus I have the "special" strut backing plates on there from mounting some H-D saddlebags that I sometimes use which gives me a little extra room compared to stock (same "kit" that comes with the H-D 180 Upgrade).

No issues at all, Dan. Mounted right up, and clears the fender and hardware. I bought mine from Chaparral Motorsports via Amazon.

New to the forum and first post. I thought HD sold a rear tire kit that allowed for a wider tire but can’t seem to find it anywhere. Is it necessary or can you just install a wider without it? Sounds like the 170 will fit. What is the best tire in this size? Does going to a wider tire affect the speedometer readings? Thanks!

Old thread!

Yes, I did install the HD Branded GT502 (180) and have run this setup for a while (stock rim) without any issues or complaints (other than wishing even wider would work). You may need the low profile inner plates for the rails that I think comes with the "wide tire kit" (I already had installed, came with earlier HD saddlebag purchase). Other than that some special attention keep wiring that is under the fender out of the way or could see some wear. No issue noticed on speedo.

My 2010 FXDWG came with a near-new 180 Metzler on the stock rear rim. No problems with clearance at all. It's a nice big tire and looks great.

Great info. I don’t see the “wide tire kit” available from Harley Davidson anymore. Do you know where I can acquire that? I suppose I should just ask the local HD dealer when the time comes to change the original tires. The Scorcher 31’s have been wearing good and I like he way the bike rides, always have, just definitely want a bigger rear tire. Did you stay with the stock size on the front tire? How do you like the GT502 tires? Did going to the bigger tire on the rear affect your riding or handling as far you can tell? Thanks!

Nice! The wide glides have a rear 180 stock, whereas the street bobs come stock with 160’s. So it’s not the same as far as clearance between our bikes I do not believe.
