Forgive the following novice post.
I'm trying to figure out how to store some bags on my bike for a trip.
I do not want saddlebags because I do not want to have to relocate the signals.
I do not want to put on a backrest/sissy bar or side plates because SHE rarely rides with me.

I have a stock seat, a passenger pillion and that's it (no luggage rack, etc...)

Is there a way to secure bagson the passenger pillion? If so, what type of bags, what type of tie downs? Any pics with this setup?

I don't take long hauls often. But I'm looking for an easy alternative without spending money on mods just to have a bag. Please let me know if you have any suggestions that suit my needs.

You might try the H-D detachable sidplates with a sissy bar. Then you will have an unlimited supply of luggage options. However, since you don't travel much it might not be worth the expense to you.

There are handlebar bags out there as well, although they aren't very big.

You can bungee stuff to your pillion, thats what I do, but only for small stuff (jacket, beer, etc).

 

If I do the detachable sideplates and sissy bar, do I also need a luggage rack or do bags just sit on the pillion? Am I right that the t-bags just slip over the sissybar?

Also, when securing small items on the pillion with just a bungee, where is the best place to secure the bungee hooks?

I mounted one of these on each side of the pillion using the fender strut bolts. They are available from Drag, Dennis Kirk, probably others:

A luggage rack is not a huge investment and works out great, Saves wear and tear on paint and abrasion on that pillion. I got the Motherwell, good prices, good quality and easy to install. I've gone for a week or more with just a small bag for clothing etc., but I do have saddle bags for general bike stuff.

i use a backpack as mentioned above. I tried a Bikerfriend on the handlebar and if you put a 5 lbs. leather jacket and other stuff you feel it in the steering. Atleast I did. I too only go on day rides. Most of the people I ride with have saddlebags and are good people so I usually get by having them tote my Shi*. Like Phone, cigs, and jacket. I have used a small backpack and while I probaby didnt look the coolest the handlebar IMO does look cool either.
