I went with a Motherwell rack that I leave on the bike all the time. I like the looks. I also bought this bag for traveling that fits well on the rack. If you also buy the top bag, you can easily sandwich a small duffel between them. That setup holds quite a bit and is rock solid while traveling.

Default Hard Mount Your Throwover Bags

I did this with my last bike. Worked great. Got the exact bag I wanted, located where I wanted it, and only cost me a trip to the hardware store.

Neither, and hope I never will.
Use a backback for the little stuff, like a laptop and a change of clothes. It could be a pink "Barbie" backpack, if you've got the ballls (I haven't ridden with it yet, but my wife has a riot with it, lots of honks and waves).

Next step up towards more capacity would be $10 worth of bungee cords, so you can strap stuff in front of your handlebars, or behind you. There's lots more capacity available that way than from conventional side-hung saddlebags.

Here is a picture of my Softail Custom with the T-Bag. I think the setup I am looking for is the same only turned around with a rack on the back.

They also have a rigid mount for a Luggage rack and Backrest.
I prefer the rigid mount, it looks cleaner. No side plates sticking out.
with the exception of the fatbob
the quick detach kit's rear mount is where the rear turn signals are.
the rigid mount for the sissy bar works without relocation
for any hd saddlebag kit ( except throw overs) the rear turn signals and saddlebags would mount to the same location. there are single mount bags that do not require a relocation kit. and im sure some 3rd party permenant mounts would mount inside the fender support.
