Default changed out my fuel filter today

A little over 30,000 miles. Looks a little dirty but no running problems. After looking at the crud in the inlet sock I replaced it too.

It's best to change the sock when you change the filter. You already have the pump out. Check the fuel lines for cracking and or pin holes while your at it. When the lines get old they tend to dry out.

Looks like it was about time. Like tomt said, probably would have been good to check the fuel lines to be safe.

I changed mine out at 92,000 miles. I could never understand why my fuel injected cars can go indefinitely w/o filter changes but my fuel injected bike requires 25,000 mile intervals?

What I did notice was how dried out and cracked the plastic fuel lines were by then though. I replaced them with R-10 submersible neoprene hose instead.

FYI, cars/trucks require changing the fuel filters every 20-25k miles as well as part of regular maintenance.

Most newer cars do not have fuel filters you can change. They are part of the fuel pump.

My '09 BMW 1200 and '12 650 GS' run lower pressure systems and do not require changing the filter.

I think I read in AI magazine you should replace the fuel lines in Harley tanks periodically to prevent FI problems. Mine still looked good.

Regarding the filter, I guess it depends on the purity of the gas, ethanol, and how long it sits in your tank as to how much gunk is collected in it. It was not difficult to change but it cost about $100 in parts. I think I could have reused the $40 cover plate gasket. The screws have a rubber gasket in the cup washer that needed to be replaced. Doing it myself saved the hour labor the dealer would
Have charged on top of the parts.

My Dyna and EGlide both have around 25K now. I was going to replace the filters and lines this winter but after seeing yours I may wait and do them every 30-40K.

Good post! I will do mine this winter. Do they all have strainer and inline filter?
