Default Drag Specialties tach on '07 Super Glide

Well, I finally did it. Yesterday I installed a Drag Specialties mini tach on my '07 Superglide.

I thought about puttingH-D's matching tach on it, but I didn't want those two big instruments sticking up.

I like the waythe smaller tach sort of nestles into the side of the speedo.

I painted the stainless steel cup and bracketblack (Krylon texture paint)to match the speedo. Also, I did not use the big ugly handlebar clamp that came with it. I simply slipped the bracket into the speedo'shandlebar clamp... I had to machine it off a bit to get it to fit, but it worked nicely. I also had to bend it at an angle to get the tach face pointing straight at me.

The redline on the '07 96-incher is 5500 rpm, so I angled the tach so that the needle points straight up at redline.

I've gotten mixed reviews: some people liked it, but others thought it looked cheap. I don't care; I like it a lot... Some pix:

Interesting setup. I wouldn't worry what others think. If you like it that's all that matters. I like the more symetrical look myself.

I understand your desire for a tach. I've been looking for something and the new Harley Sportster prototype, which if built is destined for Europe only has a setup which I like. You would also. I understand your reason for the tach angled with the 5500 rpm at the 12 O'Clock position (race track inspired). Most people like things symetrical, but I think you did a good job. I hadn't thought about that location but it seems to work well.

BTW which bars are you using and what about the tach wiring? Was that much trouble?

The bar is for an XR1000; it's #56085-83A in the 2006 Harley catalog. (56085-83T is the same bar in chrome) I had to bend the metal part of the brake line a little (do it very slowly), but other than that, everything fit pretty good.

Wiring was a bit of a pain. The '07 Super Glide requires an inductiverpm pickup (Edelbrock) and a Crane Cams tach adapter. You have to wire them alltogether. Fortunately, the instructions were pretty plain, but: you really need the '07 Dynashop manual with the circuit diagrams in the back. Without that, it would have been much harder. It tells you exactly what color wires do what.

Basically I had to run a power wire to the ignition fuse, three wires to the coil, and a ground wire. To attach the wires to the coil, I just shaved off 1/4" of insulation and soldered theconnections. The tank comes off very easily, especially with the new quick-disconnect fuel line, so I could run the wires under it.

I ordered the stuff from Dennis Kirk, as follows:
Part# H40475 Black Face 1 7/8 in. Electronic Mini-Tachometer
Part# 407395 Inductive RPM Sensor
Part# H20028 Tach Adapter

BTW, I can't recommend Dennis Kirk enough! They were great; quick service, and good tech support. They put me on the phone with their "Harley expert", and he was pretty good. Answered all my questions.
