Fenders and tanks are different in 1997- what changed?
I have a '96. Found a nice set of tins from a '97, but the part number changed in '97 ('97-'00)... anyone know what the change was? Is the rear fender and tank retro-fitable? If it's just a bolt hole or something, I can deal with it. But if it physically won't fit on the bike, then I have a problem....

I can help you a little regarding the rear fender
The 99-02 fender will interchange, I think the 03 was a one year width but it may interchange with 04. not sure about the others but my point is there are many differences.
The difference in the rear fenders is width so you cannot make one that is too wide fit
Don't know about the tanks but I think all the carb tanks will interchange but not sure
