Default Starter problem

Went to start the 03 Dyna after work today and the starter just spins and wont engage. Got it going by push starting it. Rode home with no problems. Double checked it a few times and it just spins. I pull the primary case off and check the shaft, it spins but wont engage. I grabbed the shaft spun it back and forth and then it would only spin one way. Tried it again and now it works. Wondering if any has had this problem and do you think I should replace the starter or just put it back together. Luckily I had some guys at work help me push start it. I have replaced the starter once before so it only has about 10,000 miles on it.

Sounds like a bad starter clutch. 90% of the time all other components of the starter are good.

I don`t think you should ever replace the starter, just the part that is bad.

Unless you like spending money...

From your description, the starter clutch is bad.

A caltric stock replacement . It was cheaper then a stock starter. The original starter had the clutch replaced and then went bad much later. I bought it for about $150 .

sorry not familiar. If it were me I would get an AllBalls starter or a new OEM with an up graded starter clutch.
