Default Keep the original factory paint tins or spray em

I have a yellow 2008 FXDC. The paint is nicely done with some metallic glitter. But it is yellow and I want to have it repainted black. A couple of friends said its better to buy some used tins, paint them and then keep the original factory paint in case I want to resell it.

Would I really take a big hit if I decide to sell it and it wont have the original paint? Or would someone think I crashed it and had it repainted?

I live overseas so not sure if that makes a difference, but it does say Yellow on the registration. Also, the shipping costs for used tins might be too high for me to justify it.

Thanks,
Don

I couldn't rub back set of good tins. I would look for another set.

I've done it a couple of times and kept the original tins. It's good when it comes time to sell it because you can give the buyer a choice of tins and then sell the others online and eventually you recoup your investment. This way too, they can see it wasn't smashed.

I'm repainting my bike this winter and there's no way I could justify buying new tins and keeping the originals stock.
Maybe if I had a anniversary bike or something real unusual.

If you can buy a set in the color you want, then buy another set, the cost of paint vs new tins already in your color is pretty much a wash

Just take some pictures of yourself removing them and scuffing them and painting them. Maybe time stamp them by getting a shot of your cell phone with the date on it as proof it all happened over a few day period. that way they can see it wasn't dropped.

Normally I'd say keep the factory tins and buy new ones. .but after seeing my friends bike (08 FXDC Anniversary) and a set of tins I bought off a 09 FXD (Pewter Pearl), they're just going to rust eventually. Harley for some reason paints the underside of the fenders (cheap). When a rock hits that paint and chips it, rust forms underneath the fender and eventually works its way up to the top side of the fender and causes the paint to bubble underneath. .and will chip off. It's pretty disturbing. So go ahead and paint them. Probably want to spray something like Line-X on the bottom to protect from this happening.

If they are yellow respray them. Just my personal opinion, a Harley should never be yellow.

I bought nearly new (take off) used tins in the color I wanted.Around here getting them painted would have been hella expensive I think I paid 800 for the set. Then sold off my used ones in the forum classifieds.

Note: no they weren't the denim black ones in my sig pic those are long gone.

i dont think it matters all that much about having the stock tins. i am a hobby airbrusher/ painter and repainted my first dyna 5 times in the 7 years that i owned it. when i sold it i got almost as much for it as it cost me new. it was all in the paint!
