Default question about cams

So a fairly noobish question, but what does different cams do? I guess what does this seem like a popular engine mod? And I think I get the drive for the 30T pulley. Thanks for putting up with me

It might be easier to do an internet search, how cams work or cam shaft selection for motorcycles The short answer is they change the RPM range that the motor will make the most power in. people select cams based on there driving style and there engine build. Im sure someone else can explain better.

Specifically cams control when the exhaust and intake valves open, how fast they open, how far they open, how fast and when they close, and the timing between the intake and exhaust valves.

What this actually affects is when and how much power an engine makes. Very generally speaking, a 'bigger' cam will make more power at higher RPM, but give up torque at lower RPM.

Here's a link to a site with a pretty good description and diagrams on how cams work. There's a diagram about halfway down of a single cam v-twin in action.
