Gotta give a lot of credit to my old man as well. Bought me my first bike when I was 8. I was king of the world on that Honda 50! Then I graduated to his old 1971 yamaha 250 enduro. (still runs today, sometimes better than the wideglide) I bought my own bike at 15, an '87 Honda Rebel 250. Than, a 1995 Yamaha Virago 750 a few years later. Finally my '01 wide. I'm 25, still have all the bikes in my garage, except the Virago (the wife made me sell it for a downpayment on the HD!

Great story about your first motorvated wheels.
Five horse Briggs, that's a lotta engine for a youngun.
I don't think it was a Highlander. Maybe a RoadKing or a VaraMatic.

for me 20years,
got my first bike for free....a '69 Honda 90. A neighbour had bought it new, drove over another neighbours kid, and then threw the bike in his back garden for 17 years.It was fairly rotted but for me it was a schoolboys dream come true. well, without the *****. a lotta cleaning, and a tin of red paint and it got me to school for the next few yrs.
then lots of honda 125's, 400 and 750/4's, some other big japs, z1000 -lotta fun, and then brit twins, after that i was converted!..including a bsa a65 which i rebuilt a few yrs ago, still have it and have the 90, and am rebuilding a '40 bsa m20 now.
