Umm.. I wont say if it can or cant... Theres a decent chance that the bottom end of the 2 engines is the same or close..

But - Why!? :P .. That would effectively turn a 96" into a 88"... Most people wana go UP not down

The jugs are the same.....the 88 has a 4" stroke while the 96 has a 4.375" stroke.

Default 88" Vs 96"

The cylinders are the same bore size...The difference is in the stroke. The 96 has a different crank that has a longer stroke and that's the difference in displacement. The heads are similar and interchangeable but the 96" heads have been reworked to have better flow characteristics. The 96" bottom end has a better oil pump and beefier cam support plate along with different cam chain tensioners.

And the pre-2003 88s have a beefier forged crankshaft with better timken bearings.

thanks guys doing the poor man big bore kit is the plan. and if i can get some heads i can have work done to them and the springs changed for high lift and just do a top end swap instead of paying out the a$$ for the new parts

That won't work, the pistons will be wothless to you. There is a lot more to the enginge size than just the pistons and cylinders. On the 88", you can only do a big bore to 98" max. The stick bore is the same as the 96" bore. The 96" has a longer strike to get those 8". On the 96", you can big bore to 107" max. Due to the longer stroke crank, it has different pistons and rods from the 88". They are not interchangeable. Only the cylinders and heads are. If you want to go larger than 107", you have to split the lower case and use a stroker crank with matching rods and pistons. Also, if you use the older 88" heads, you will have to use different intake flanges to fit your current manifold on. So if you want a budget build, you will not gain any cubic inches without boring the cylinders and getting matched pistons. Quickly becomes an expensive build.
