Just a thought....it is not good for the fuel pump to run it dry...which is probably why they set those gauges so they read empty when there is still fuel around the pump.

I'm late to the party, but I'm glad I finally found this thread. For years, I've been wondering why my 2010 Wide Glide will only fill up to 3 gallons. I wasn't sure if this was a replacement of the older reserve fuel partition, or some such. Now I see it's just a common "deal with it" thing.

If I trick the pump into topping off my bike, then I only get about 0.5 gallons more. The bike usually spits up a good amount of that extra fuel right through the cap's breather. Anyone else experiencing this?

Just got my bike. I have the odometer set on clock mode (with trip meter running in the background). Plan on running 4 tanks of fuel through it. That should give me a good measure of MPG and range. After this test, I'll switch off the clock and use the trip meter for my fuel gauge going forward.

Only the rankest amateur relies on the fuel nozzle to stop fueling a bike.

My previous bike held about 2 gallons more.
X 2 that's pretty similar to mine.

I put in about 4-4.2 gallons everytime I fill up my Fat Bob and it usually says around 15 miles left till empty. Once I got 4.6 in it and it just said low fuel. I think It kind of factors in that .5 gallon as like a reserve, but I wouldn't make a habit of dipping into that last bit. And I do fill it all the way up.

My '13 FXDF is about the same. I put 4.47g in with 179m of mixed riding. So the FB gas gauge is closer
to real life then my '12 RK(180m, light on showing 38-40m to empty = fill up only takes 4g). I bent the RK
float arm 5degrees and the next fill up was about .5g closer(shows 36m to empty and needed 4.5g to fill).
I will check it a couple more times before adjusting the float arm a second time.

Next I will be checking the '11 Super GC and see how it does.

I have gone 170 miles on a full tank. when i topped off it took about 4.5 gallons. and thats doing about 85 on the highway the whole way. I am sure i could stretch it out a little farther if i rode more conservativly. But 170 is my limit and then its time for gas. I dont go off the gas gauge.

:-/ I'm a fuel newb for 5 years.

I'll put my fingers around the tank inlet and cinch up the nozzle boot. This usually brings it out a little to prevent premature shut off. Sometimes I try to get a little more out of it. All seems fine until I crank 'er up and the tank pukes on me.
