Remember, when I drained the oil the second time, that oil went right back in...didn't add any additional.

Something else came to mind as well: After changing the oil and running it at idle, the oil looked like ***. I assumed it was from a dirty engine (previous owner didn't remember when the oil was changed last) and planned on doing a series of quicker changes to flush the system out (no solutions, just new oil/filter). Oil remaining in the lines and nooks and crannies would dirty up the new oil quickly and definitely account for an overfill.

And yes, I read the manual and took the 3 quart capacity as bond. Won't do THAT again!!

I'll drain the oil and refill with two quarts and go from there. I appreciate the suggestions!

It's not that hard to fill to the line on the dipstick. Everyone else does it.

As far as stripping the drain plug, use a torque wrench to prevent that.

Without trying to sound like a dick, I know that. I did fill it to the line, and it took three quarts. In hindsight, the engine must not have been at FOT like I thought it was, so I inadvertently overfilled it.

And the problem is that the previous owner did not use a torque wrench, and now the plug is stripped...I need to fix it.

Don't take this the wrong way, but are you sure you drained engine oil and not the trans?
If you are not familiar or in a hurry easy to get the wrong plug under there.

No offense taken, valid question. I did all three lubes, clutch and primary adjustments and plugs. My mistake seems to have come from thinking ten minutes at idle was a sufficient heat up time. Live and learn.

Dude I did the same thing almost. Drained the old oil out and added from what I thought was the correct amount per the service manual and the owners manual. go figure that after that I was 1/4 quart too much

Spot on. I had an old manual oil pump in my tool chest, sucked out some of the oil and took it for a nice long ride. No spillage. Drain plug is still doing an occasional drip, so it will still need to be properly addressed, but now I can park in a driveway without making a God awful mess!

And is how you learn about servicing your own machine. One thing I learned about my trans oil, I put in a measured 22ozs., if you go to 24 ozs.when it gets hot it could vent then you have another mess. It might be a bit **** but I pre-measure my fluids prior to pouring them in the holes, then top off only if and when neccesary.
