Default Beginning to build my 21 inch wheel...

Today I began the wheel build. First thing I came up with was the need for new bearings. To remove the front wheel bearings on a Dyna there is a very expensive looking tool that the MOCO says you need.
I do not have that tool. Maybe someone out there knows of a way to do this, other than what I did to remove the bearings.

Since I am in a hurry to get new bearings installed, I just dropped a piece of 3/4 inch diameter steel rod down into one of the bearings. Then I welded the rod and bearing inner race together.
I flipped it over and went to my press and easily pressed out the welded bearing. Out came the bearing and sleeve. To remove the second bearing I used a 1 1/8 diameter wood dowel and the floor press to push it out from the opposite side. Next, I will price the bearings at a bearing supply house before I resort to buying them from a dealer. That will be the last place I go.
The next tool I have to make is a bearing installer to get the new brgs in straight.
More updates later, if anybody cares.............pg

Today I found out that the wheel bearings on the front wheel are special bearings, not available at a bearing supply house.
So, I had to buy them at a dealer afterall.
I am still waiting to get my Ankront rim and SS spokes from J&P, so I have started to fabricate the bearing install tool which I will need to install both bearings in correctly.
Today I made the support plate and have started the fabrication of the 3/4 inch pilot tool............pg

Great idea with the ?1.5"? aluminum rod. I just wonder if a piece of pipe with a coupler on one end would work to press the bearings in?

Thanks for the update!

You are close Rudedog....the aluminum rod is 2 1/8 inch diameter. It took me 10 minutes just to cut off a piece of this stuff using a Sawsall.
A bearing could be pressed in using a piece of pipe (or a large socket) but it would most likely be cocked. The idea of using a pilot guide comes to me because I am duplicating what is a factory made tool.
The pilot has a 3/4 inch diameter nose which goes through the wheel bearing. This keeps the bearing straight as the bolt is tightened drawing the bearing home.
The same method is used to install the other bearing.
H-D makes a pilot for both a 3/4 and 1 inch size bearing, depending on which axle size you have. Either can be made at home of course. More to come as I make progress............pg

Thanks a great press. I never would have thought of that. Like a streering wheel puller in reverse.

Bluepoint makes a bearing press kit that is pretty trick. Just a bit of information for guys who don't have the skills to make thier own.

Keep up the updates. I have only laced a mountian bike rim. I will learn something here for sure.

Alaska Bobber......funny that you should mention mountain bike wheels.
I learned to build wheels while working a part time job at REI in their bike shop (bicycle). There is a book named The Bicycle Wheel that deals with the subject in depth. Motorcycle wheels are no different.
I will continue to update my progress........pg

I spent this morning finishing the build of my homemade wheel bearing install tool. After that I installed both new wheel bearings into the hub on my 2003 FXDL, and took some photos as I went.
So, as promised, I will post the photos using 2 or 3 posts to do the nine shots.
Now all I am waiting on is to get the 21 inch Ankront rim and the stainless steel spokes so I can build this wheel. More photos of that phase later......pg
