Thanks for asking Gamma....
No, not yet. Here is where I'm at....I got the rim and spokes from J&P last week. The rim looks good, but the spokes were all the same size. Since this hub is laced to the inside it means I need 20 spokes with a short head and 20 with a long head. (I'm talking about the bent ends that go into the hub.)
I called J&P and they checked and called back the next day saying that they do not stock what I need. So, I returned the spokes to JP and got on the phone to Buchanan on the West Coast and they have the spokes. I ordered a set of stainless steel with a polished finish.
At this moment the spokes are bouncing along on a UPS truck somewhere between LA and Houston. I look to get them this week and continue the project soon after they get here. I'll keep an update posted for sure........pg

Finally after getting the wrong spoke set from J&P and returning those, the correct spokes have arrived from Buchanan.
The spoke set that fits the narrow hub of a late model Sportster or FX is KHD902SS. I ordered the P40 finish which is the polished stainless. These spokes come with a bag of polished SS nipples and a container of lube. Buchanan only makes spokes and they are the best, so if any of you ladies out there want to try this yourself, go to
http://www.buchananspokes.com and check out what they offer. The rim I have chosen to use is an Akront 2.15 x 21 inch aluminum item.

For the narrow hub all of the spokes are pointing to the inside of the hub, which means you need 20 spokes with short necks and 20 with long necks. The long neck spokes go innermost and each long neck spoke crosses 4 of the short neck spokes which are the outermost spokes.
Yea, I know...clear as mud. Anyway this is called a 4 cross pattern.
I put the spokes (short and long) in the first side today but got involved with something else and decided to leave the project alone until I have more time.
There will be more posts as the wheel progresses........pg

Default RE: Beginning to build my 21 inch wheel...

Today I found the time to go out in the shop and finish building the 21 inch wheel to put on my Dyna Low Rider. I had the project on hold for a while until I could get the correct spokes.

The wheel build went smoothly. Building a wheel is so simple and so much fun that I find each time I build one I am sad to see it finished. This one was no different. The finished wheel had a total radial runout of .008 inch and the lateral total runout was .010 inch. That is very round and very straight indeed, so I am quite happy with it.

This wheel used a 4 cross spoke pattern. This is just a little more involved that building a wheel that uses, say... a 2 cross pattern. The cross pattern reference is relating to how many other spokes cross over a single spoke in the wheel lacing.
Maybe everyone knows this, but for those who don't (and who care, I should add) the 4x means a single spoke is crossed by 4 other spokes, the 2x is crossed by only 2 other spokes etc. The more spokes that cross a single spoke, the greater the strength of the wheel.
I have a few photos to post of what I did and I will attach some here and do another post to attach the rest.

The first photo is a rod I made up to install into the wheel and place both wheel spacers on the end of it. This allows me to pick up the wheel and spacers and stick them right into the Dyna's forks. I then insert the axle and this rod is pushed out onto the ground by the axle insertion. This eliminates the pain of trying to hold the wheel and get both of those spacers in place while fumbling with the axle with the 3rd hand you don't have. You know what I mean.

The next photo is the way I tagged the spokes when I began to true the wheel. Grouping the 40 spokes into 10 groups of 4 each really is an advantage. Each group has 2 spokes left and 2 spokes right at one section of the wheel. You adjust all 4 spokes using even turns. This keeps the rim centered on the hub.
This is done group by group. Just designate 4 opposed groups as east_west_north_south and use only these four groups to get the wheel concentric (radial) on the hub and the rim centered (lateral) on the hub in the beginning.
After that is accomplished you simply run all the other nipples up snug by hand. Then begin to wrench tighten as you go around the wheel spoke by spoke. These groups of 4 allow you to easily obtain a true and centered wheel with the spokes having the proper tension.
When you find you must make a correction at the spot where a group is located, let's say the rim needs to move left..... simply loosen the two spokes on the right first and tighten the two spokes on the left by the same amount. The rim moves over to the left.
To my knowledge you cannot buy this wheel I built. If there is a wheel out there laced with an aluminum Ankront rim on it and a hub that fits your bike, I guarantee you will spend a lot more to buy it than I spent to build this sweet little item..........pg

Here is the finished wheel. I still need to grind down some of the spoke ends where they came out the nipples. After that I will mount the tire and put the wheel on the Dyna to see how it looks.......pg
