Belt Guard ...

.......
I took mine off then put them back on after noticing that the pulley looked like it was getting abraded from road sand/dirt. To clean it up a bit I altered the lower belt guard. I matched the radius of the pulley, trimmed the bottom so its level with the bottom of the belt, and cut out some of that triangle.

I run with both mine on...guess it depends on the bike.
If you're bike has a lot of parts removed or bike is heavily modded, or if you have nice wheels & matching sprocket then it looks good without the guards.
I think my bike looks better with them on...kind of completes it & adds another piece of chrome. I'm thinking of replacing the lower plastic guard with a chrome one, or buying the HD lower belt guard chrome cover.
I ran with the guards off on my Sporty, but don't see me doing that on my Dyna. I don't ride on gravel roads, but do ride through a gravel parking lot @ work & there always seems to be a lot of pebbles and sand on the roads here, so leaving them on is probably a good idea for me anyway.
