My .02:

The cover in the first pic looks restrictive, thats probably why there is a cut out

The second pic looks like it would pull unnecessary hot air from the cooling fins.

It's an OEM HD cover used on the Blackline, not sure what the number is though, From what I can tell its the same cover they used on the EVO models but without the cutout - which was used for carb clearance, not air flow. I got it because it had what I was after - nice clean look, no cutout and not too large or small.

Personally, I like the smaller covers. I also like these that wrap around the filter to deflect any rain. If you know of more round covers other than these three, post them here.

Just found another one.

Harley 7" Bobber style cover. Part #61300120

Given that the fitment description include the FXS (Blackline) with OEM backing plate, I think you'll find that is the same diameter as the OEM Blackline cover and IMO - not much different.

Default Big Sucker Stage 1 + round cover on a 2002 Sportster

Hi,

my name is Frank and I´m from Germany.

On my Google-search for this issue I´ve found this thread, registered to this Forum and hope for help, even if this a Dyna-Forum.

My plan is to add a Ness Big Sucker Stage 1 to my 2002 Sportster 1200 Custom. This is one of the model year with the interference-tube between the two exhaust manifolds. The exhaust is quite stock except Rush Slip Ons.

I want to complete the Big Sucker with a round cover, which shall go over the filter-element.

The question is:
Which round cover will for sure fit my ride?

I would prefer the Ness 8 inch (= 20,35 cm/centimeters*) cover with Ness P/N 18-496, but I have some doubts if this may be a little to big in diameter. Little to big with reference to the interference tube of the exhaust.

I have measured the size of the original, oval cover: it is around 21,50 cm wide.

From that point of view: the 8 inch Ness cover probably could fit.

As far as I know (you may correct me!!) at least some round Harley 7 inch covers go with the Big Sucker stage 1 as well.

I was given Harley P/N 29153-07 as a rerefence.

Okay, this might work, even if this is not top of my list.

If I would go for that Harley-Cover:
Do I need to buy a separate chromed scew or is it included in the kit (same for the Ness Cover). If I need to buy a screw: what kind of screw it is? P/N available?

Does anyone of you have an idea, which round cover will fit to my Sporty (having in mind the space/interference tube)?

I was searching the web for any pic, that shows a Sportster of that age, a mounted Big Sucker and the Ness Cover. This far without success.

Any help highly appreciated. Thank!

Regards
Frank

*: 1 inch equals 2,54 cm/centimeters

[EDIT]

Just found another one.

Harley 7" Bobber style cover. Part #61300120

Part #61300120 (bobber) is actually 8" diameter. Pretty much the same as the stock EVO cover.
Smooth cover 29244-08 is 7". I just got done trying both and ended up going with the smooth 7" on my '10 Ultra. Both fit fine over the SE Stage-1 but IMHO, the 7" was much cleaner. It's a good looking engine and I didn't want it hidden behind a "football" shaped cover.

I have the smooth cover on the Big Sucker and it's a close fit to the filter. It's about as small in diameter as it could be.

I’ve had an Arlen Ness Big Sucker Kit on:
07 SB
09 NT
12 FLD
I used the same 7" AC Cover on all 3.
