2003 FXDL Fuel Gage

2003 FXDL Fuel Gage
Apparently I pissed the other dude off by posting on his thread....
He wants me to start a new one.
I was just trying not to post a similar question.
Anyway, my 2003 low rider gets to around 100 miles and the fuel gage shows empty. Then when I fill it up it only takes about 3 gallons. Don't I have a 4.9 gallon tank?
Now I just got the bike in January, so I haven't "run it dry" yet.
I plan to do this like I had to on my old metric bikes and reset the trip meter to calculate mileage.
My question is why have a fuel gage if it is not accurate?

You don't have a tank lift on the front of the tank, do you ...? If you bought the bike second hand, check to see if the previous owner installed a tank lift ...
The stock tank holds 4.9 gallons, which includes 0.9 gallons of reserve ...
If the fuel gauge is not reading the correct quantity, you can adjust the float arm to improve the accuracy ... you remove the fuel gauge and the arm is underneath the sending unit ...

All good advice. Just one minor point. According to the specs on my 2000 FXDL, the tank does hold 4.9 gallons, but reserve should be 1.1 gallons (not .9 gallons). It may be different on the 2003, but likely not as I'm pretty sure that the tanks are the same.
