Default New Vance and Hines Pipe QUESTIONS

OK, so I'm going to the dealer today to order a new set of Vance and Hines Black Short Shots for my '09 Street Bob, my question is how do I keep from getting ripped off by my HD dealer when it comes to installing them? I know I can't do it myself because this is my first Harley and I'm not a great mechanic. Also I need to know once they are installed do I have to have the bike Dynoed and if so will that be an extra cost or is it something THEY have to do for installing the new pipes? Finally if I do have to have it Dynoed should I then buy some sort of Tuner so I don't have to go through this process again? Hope you can understand what I'm trying to say.
Thanks for your HELP

Dont buy the pipe from the dealer!!! You will pay wayyyy too much. Order the pipes you want online through Dennis Kirk or some other discounted parts place. I know you want the dealer to do the install, but pipes are probably one of the easiest mods you can do with minimal mechanical knowledge. Vance and Hines provide good instructions, and if you get to a point where you are unsure, You Tube is a great help. If you're doing just pipes, its not necessary to re-tune, but is a good idea...

simply do it yourself and you will save alot of money. i know you say your not a mechanic but for a simple exhaust you dont need to be. trust me and all the others that will chime in and say " do it yourself " unless you live in alaska and you dont have a garage and you only have one arm. then i would let the dealer do it. tuner question. if your just installing an exhaust then you dont i repeat dont need a tuner or a dyno tune. the dealer will probaly say you need the stage 1 download at the least. doing that wont hurt but again not 100% needed. that will cost you about 150 bucks for the download. but if in the future you get an upgraded ac unit and then a tuner, the stage 1 download will go away and thats money wasted. so bottom line is do it yourself. but if you cant, then just know you dont need a tuner, or dyno for just doing an exhaust.

BUY THEM ONLINE AND DO IT YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!! its only 4 nuts on the heads, 3 for the mount, 4 for exhaust to attach to mount, 7 screw clamps, and 2 o2 sensors. like said above you can use youtube or this forum if you have questions. disconnect the battery terminals and use loctite on the mounting nuts. as far as buying them go to ebay if you dont harley will order them from v&h for full price.

Yes ...do not buy the pipes from the dealer! Go to www.harleypartsdirect.com an order them. If you can read (a 3 page instruction sheet with a lot of big pictures), and could change a flat tire on your car, or the oil ...you can install those pipes. All you need is a socket set and a couple wrenches. If you can't read, don't have the mechanical ability to change a tire, or don't have a socket set ...find a teenage kid on your street that does and buy him a couple packs of cigarettes to do the work!

Also ...You really don't need an EFI tuner for just a set of pipes. Although with or without an EFI tuner ...you will probably get a little bit of decel popping on occasion with the shortshots. And whatever you do ...DO NOT pay the dealer to dyno that bike just for a set of pipes!! If your going to do that ...just send me half the money ...I'll just tell you the bike runs great, and sounds great!!

You really should do this your self, you will enjoy it more later as you have the satisfaction of doing it your self, and save some money for other goddies. take some of the money you will save and buy a shop manual. it will have all the torq spec's. the only issue i ran into was remving the old crush gasket. use a small screw driver to pry it away from the side of the exhaust port on the head.
there are several threads here about installing exhaust.
I bought my used vance and hines big shots from a forum member, got them and installed them in under 1 hour.
Just take a few precautions, i put down some old blankets, layed everything out on them, if there are any areas that your afraid you might scratch with a wrench, just wrap some painters tape around that area. just remember to remove it and any adheasive before starting the bike up.
It actually took my longer to install a SE air cleaner than my V & H pipes. HD included really bad instructions, and i had to go slow, remove and start over at least 2 times. There is no need for a tune with only pipes, if you want to richen the mix with out a tuner, get some XIED's from nightrider... i'm using them until i do the cams and get a dyno tune then. they work great.

I AM NOT MECHANICALLY INCLINED!!!!! Replacing my stock pipes was my first crack at working on a motorcylce by myself. I grabbed the neigbor, drank a few beers, and we had it done in under an hour. YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF!!!!!!!!
