Default Crank Position Sensor Failure on '04 Dyna

I had a total engine-run failure on my '04 FXDP & I thought I might document my experience for possible benefit of others.

My bike is pre-EFI (carbed) so the '07 & later Dyna's may be totally different. It just simply refused to start one day out of the blue. NO engine light was lit, & NO codes were set in diagnostic system! Also, contrary to what I've read previously, tach needle jumping to 300 while cranking is NOT an indication of a good CKP!

When pulling plugs & grounding against heads with other plugs in cylinders (for comp pressure), I got an occasional weak spark. Checked coil primary/secondary with VOM and while a bit high, were both barely within spec. Same for original plug wires. Center lead to coil (white wire) showed continuous 12 input so coil was getting power.

In checking CKP sensor with VOM, it showed infinite resistance across the two pins. So I figgered that had to be it.

Ordered new CKP sensor from Lake Shore Harley and in checking it with VOM, it showed 948 ohms across the pins. Installed it, and bike sprang to life immediately.

This thing failed with absolutely no warning. Some sharp poster once said he carried a spare CKP with him on the bike. I think I'll do the same.

I will second that motion... my 02 did the same thing the other month.... I will be carrying a spare for long trips... it will leave you dead in the water if it goes south without warning. That thing was a pain to wire in the original factory wire loom when replacing, hardest part of the job and "don't splice the wires" to avoid this step

If it goes out on me on the road, i will just run the wire on the outside until i can wire later...and make sure you carry a small screwdrive/icepick for those deutsch connectors... "

Nope, you have to take the old one off and reuse or buy a new one. They do this, so you can fish the wire through

deutsche connectors are cheap, why not just pick up a spare attach it to your wires and then you are ready to plug and play if the need ever hits.

that's not the problem, wiring through the factory loom , is not a spur of the moment job. I would just carry a spare crank sensor/wire undo the bad one under the seat at the connector and plug the new one into the connector.... the wiring would be on the outside temporarily

I did not have to do that. The HD sensor I ordered from Lakeshore Harley using the proper part # had the connector attached (exactly like the old one) and the shielded connector wire was the exact same length. Alls I had to do was snake the shielded wire around the filter, plug the sensor connector to the harness connector & clip the connector back onto the frame stub to retain it. Piece o cake. Install took maybe 2 min.

maybe a 2002 is different... i ran mine through the factory fabric mesh loom " this is gonna take longer than 2 min, maybe an hour" as far as i know the deustche connector is not included with the factory part, you have to reuse the old one
