Well, the Dyna and Touring bikes don't have a separate oil tank under the seat like the Sporty's or Softails, however they don't carry the oil in the sump either. It is routed underneath the transmission in an "oil pan". This is where both the transmission fluid and engine oil reside (separately, of course).
The V-Rod on the other hand is a different beast.

You are correct, check the oil on the side stand when on level ground.
Follow the owners mauual instructions below and see if you still have drips.
for cold check level do not exceed mid level on dipstick when refilling with oil.
When checking at operating temp (idle 1 - 2 min. before turning off) add only enough oil to bring the level to the full mark on the dip stick.
If your checking your bike cold and its at the full mark its probably overfilled
