Default Oil Cooler Question

I have a 09 FXD and was thinking about installing an Oil Cooler. Are those two plugs on the front of the Oil Filter Bracket used for oil cooler hook up ? Or do you have to purchase a oil filter adapter that the oil cooler makers are selling ?????

Whats your current setup look like? I mean if ya want an oil cooler, ok. But, unless ya have done significant... and i mean significant engine mods or spend an hour or so sitting still in traffic on 100 degree days, ya really dont need one.

Default Oil Cooler

To answer your question.. No that is not where the cooler connects. It's been about 5 years since I installed mine but you have an adapter plate that screws on to where the oil filter screws on. You then can put the oil filter on the adapter and you connect the hoses to the adapter that run to the cooler.

The thing to note is that the adapter plate contains the Thermostat that controls the oil flow in cold and hot oil conditions and the input and outlet lines connect to the plate.

In theory you could connect to those plugs but you would be bypassing the oil filter and you would not have a thermostat to control oil flow to the cooler. Both of those are not wise choices.
