Shop I used to work at always used brakekleen for oil changes .. you know that big mess of oil you get from taking the filter off? Well the techs would just spray it down with brakekleen and that would take care of the oil. Didn't seem to harm the paint on the frame or do any damage to the regulator ..

+1 on the brakekleen or any other brake cleaner aerosol. A mild but effective degreaser for washing is Shout laundry cleaner. Cleans off brake dust pretty good.

Auto zone brand brake cleaner works great for this kind of stuff. Ive used it on all kinds of painted surfaces and its never done any damage. Hell I even use it to clean tree sap off my car. I clean my rotors with it every couple of weeks too.

A buddy of mine also refershed my memory of nail polish remover... Don't let that $hit near your bike, Truck, car or anything else that you want to keep looking good.

I use regular brake cleaner on my engine and had no issues with it - takes off oil or whatever and leaves it looking new. Carb cleaner is another story, its just this side of paint stripper.

Don't want to get that stuff on plastic, either. Some plastics will hold up for a while, but some dissolve pretty fast. I hate trying to clean carbs that have non removable plastic parts, can't soak 'em. For cleaning oil like that, I stick with degreasers that say they won't hurt paint; haven't caught any lying about that yet. I'd rather wait for another day than damage my paint. And whatever I use I wash off with clean water and rag dry what I can reach.
