2002 Super Glide Sport NEED INFO
a neighbor is selling this bike, a 2002 Dyna Super Glide Sport. its all blacked out, except for chrome exhaust pipes and front forks. it has 24,000 miles on it.
Its got a "bent" right tail light, a dent in the gas tank (small and practically under the handle bars), rust on the exhaust pipes (most noticeable) and pretty much any where there is chrome (less noticeable).
Everything else appears to be stock, except for these tiny mirrors that may be stock, but they look like they dont belong. He says it rides mint. I didnt take a look at it till late today (about 8pm EST) and couldnt take it for a ride.
Hes asking $5,800. No saddle bags. No Windshield.
I currently ride a 1998 Honda Shadow 750 with just shy of 2k miles on it. I was planning on getting bigger bike sometime next year. I was looking into harleys and victorys when he said he had this. To be honest I really dont know much about Harleys to being with (I have less than a year of riding under my belt)
He says this is a steal, of course he would, and its approaching the end of the season, Im just looking for some information as to whether or not this is a good deal. Hes going to keep it about a week for me to decide before he posts it o nthe internet. If anyone has opinions please email me at jvkeboxhero@gmail.com
thanks guys!

Ask him if he has a maintenance history on the bike. One concern would be the cam chain tension shoes. This puppies wear out because of the rubbing caused by the cam chain, design flaw. If the shoes have not been changed they are in the window to be looked at at least. The 2002 motor is a strong motor. By the way welcome to the forum.

thanks for the welcome.
If you dont mind, Id prefer to ask him all my questions relatively at once. So I appreciate what you had to say, and I wrote it down, but Im gonna wait a day or so to see if this picks up.
If YOU can think of ANY more questions you would ask, and what the "correct" answers are (or what Im looking to hear) PLEASE feel free to let me know. I dont want to rush into any big purchases, but i also dont want to let a good deal slip out of my fingers. Kelleys Blue Book lists the bike between Good and Excellent condition from $5,010 to $6,400. so $5,800 is right in the middle, but I dont know.
Im not UNhappy with my bike, but id def like something bigger. And American.

The price is fair if it did not have any damage. I would consider how much it will cost to fix and deduct that. I got mine with lower miles and in excellent condition for $5600. The cam chain tensioners is an issue on all older TC 88 engines and is not a make or break in my book. Just consider it maintenance you might have to do. I've also heard that the '02 is the best year. Improved swing arm and still has the good bearings.

With a little damage and some rust on the bike, I'm more worried about the maintenance regularity that was done on the bike. Was that kept outside a lot? I would think that this time of year, you'd be able to to talk him down on the price.
I have an '01 Super Glide with 48,000 miles on it and I'll be doing the first swap of the cam chain tensioners this winter but I hear the life of the tensioners vary on every bike. I change the oil every 2,500 miles and I run full synthetic. Not sure if that's the difference but I inspected the cam chain tensioners earlier this year and weren't wearing real bad. Good luck with the bike if you end up buying.

If it's not been properly and regularly serviced I'd leave it. If it has and the rust is because it's spent a year or 2 outdoors then it would be worth a test ride. These are great bikes - I have a '99 and it's been faultless from new because it gets cared for. Tensioners are an issue and personally I think any 10 year old Harley that hasn't had this looked at would be one to take extra care with.

I just went from a 2001 Honda shadow 1100 to a FXD and LOVE it! I have a nicer seat and progressive suspision on there. Amazing ride and a huge difference in power obviously. I bought mine for 6300 with saddle bags, new tires and mini- apes. I asked and had a mechanic look at the tensioners. That can cost you from my understanding. Good luck!
