I bought the Harley detachable sissy bar and back rest for my 2011 Wide Glide. My wife likes to go on short, easy rides (10-20 miles), but I would like to encourage her to go on longer rides. However, I'm worried that the detachable sissy bar is not as sturdy/safe as a hard mounted bar. My worry is that, due to the detachable brackets and hardware, it is not as solid as a bolted on bar and could detach with her leaning back on it sometime during a ride. Am I being overly worried? Has anyone had any problems like that? She weighs about 140 lbs. Are these things pretty bullet proof?

 

I think your just being overly worried. I have the datachable on my 11 wide glide. With no problems. Been on 100-200 miles rides with the wife in tow. no problems.

 

I had 2 datachable sissy bars on to different bikes. First one was on my nightster 13500 mile and no problems. 2nd one is on my current bike which is 2011 wide glide and no problems. just make sure and latch it down and go.

 

I have the detachable on my 10 Wide Glide and have no issues with it. The mount is sturdy and my Ol Lady definitely enjoys the rides more now with the backrest on.

 

Mine has hauled luggage 3000 miles, had passenger leaning on it for many miles since. No problems, it's solid. Your worrying over nothing I'd say, just keep an eye on the bar and the connection points.

 

How much these detachable sissy's cost?

 

Got one on my Superglide and solid as a rock. No issues at all.

 

Back from the dead thread, I am starting to look for a detachable padded sissy bar for the wife. She love's to ride but not a fan of the current set up. I got a bigger rear seat but she still is not comfortable with no back rest. Can any of you guys lead me into the right direction for something you would reccomend. Did you need to remove the current stock sissybar?

 

Yes, you need to remove the stock sissy bar. For this one piece bar you will also need the docking hardware. Great bar with a nice thick pad.As far as the seat anything beside the stock seat.

 

Not necessary. I've kept the stock sissy but have the detachable on occasionally too.

I agree with what's been said: no problems with carrying the wife on board either. The docking hardware design is pretty secure.
