RE: metzeler 180mm X 17" rear?
They make a 180/55/R17 in different styles, check the link above. But the difference between a 160/70/R17 and the 180/55/R17 is that with the lower profile tire your speed will be off by approx. 2%.
So if your speed is 60mph you might be doing 62 mph.

RE: metzeler 180mm X 17" rear?
Metzeler's 180mm tires will NOT fit your 4,5" rim properly. All their 180mm tires are designed for 5.50-6.00" rims.
Metzeler's 160/70B-17 is the direct replacement for your Dunlop K591 160/70B-17.
Check here for Metzeler specifics: http://www.us.metzelermoto.com/media/metzeler_2006.pdf
HD/Dunlop Screamin Eagle GT502 180/60B17 is specifically designed for a 4.5" rim
Make: Harley-Davidson | Model: FXSTDSE2 (04) - Screamin' Eagle Softail Deuce: http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/fitmentguide.asp
Hope this helps,

RE: metzeler 180mm X 17" rear?
so i'm stuck w/ dunlop? not that i have a problem w/ them in fact i have almost 6k on the original tires and they still look good.
it's just that ive heard nothing but great things about metzelers and wanted to see[feel] for myself.
cant justify the expense of a new rim though... hell, i'd just change to a 16" and have no prob finding tires....
awesome quote in your sig dog!

Don't know that you are stuck with Dunlop for a 180mm.
Maybe the other folks here have put other 180's on their rims with success.
I only know what my research has revealed to me.
Check the specs on different manufactures tires. It is possible that some of the 170's are as wide (or nearly) as anothers 180.
What I have noticed is the 160mm replacement from Dunlop, Metzeler, Avon have the reinforced tire, and higher load ratings.
I have the Metzeler 160/70B17 on my Dyna rear, and am very satisfied with it. My Dunlop was pretty much shot at 6K miles.
I think my next tire change (will be front and rear) may be Avon Storm-Sts 160/70ZR17.
Good luck,
DougJ
