Default Help Analyze my Plugs

Just rode the bike with the new pipe for about 30mi, ran really good, although some decel popping here and there. Put a new set of plugs in before the ride, here is what the front plug looks like after the ride:

I guess I'm not very good at this, seems to run great and not get real hot, but the plug looks a little lean to me?

Yup - lean.

With modern fuels with detergents and no lead reading plugs aint easy. The only reliable place to read them is on the base ring. Here's how: http://www.dragstuff.com/techarticle...ead-plugs.html

They're supposed to be a little lean, depending on modifications. They look remarkably like the one's I took out of my Road Glide this morning, that just turned 92,000 miles...

Agreed, I think that they look just fine. I don't think that you have any issues but it was only 30 miles on a new set of plugs.

Cool, i don't seem to have any noticeable issues with it running, so I will let it be for now and check again in 100 miles or so.

Looks exactly like my plugs looked at the 400 mile mark on my 2011 Super Glide Custom before I installed my new slip-ons. I showed one of the plugs to my local Harley service shop. They said it is OK and that they burn lean. I installed the new slip-ons and ran the bike for a while. After about 50 miles or so I removed the slip-ons and went back to the stock pipes because I lost some bottom end. The plugs did look the same with the new slip-ons as they looked with the stock pipes. I think I will wait till I get some mapping device and air cleaner.

Your seeing deposits from the leaded fuel we run. To properly read a plug you need to look down the inside and see a "fuel ring" around the porcelin about 1/16" from the base. You will need a flash light do do this. If you have any "peppering (litte black spotting)" on the poreclin on the top by the electrode that is a sign of a lean condition.

Heat range looks good, as determined by the strap, lean for me by the porcelain. Could possibly go 1 hotter to get the burn tighter to the electrode. I like a little color on the porcelain, which would be slightly rich. The porcelain is read from electrode to base for engine RPMs, the nearest being low and towards the base being higher RPMs. JMO though.
