probably been asked before but I'm asking anyway. I am replacing my air filter. I want to go with the stage 1. Can, or would it be possible for me to get the back plate from the stealer, and then buy a K&N from like advanced auto, or auto zone ? Or wouldn't that work. Or, wouldn't that be any cheaper ?

Yes it can be done. There are stickys over in the DIY forum, also a search feature on this forum will find past posts. I would go with an Arlan Ness Big Sucker for less money and better performance, plus I feel it is better at recovering the engine oil vapor.

It's more than just the backplate and filter. There are some other parts necessary to make your own SE air cleaner. But if you can dig up one of those threads, a complete parts list is available and surprisingly, it IS cheaper than buying the kit.

I have a hypercharger and had the breather hooked up to it properly and the air cleaner kept blowing my crankcase oil vapor on the bottom of the filter and making a mess of my bike. After talking to a couple guys at my local indy shop, they convinced me to "T" the lines into one and run a hose out the bottom of the bike. I did, and it worked great and makes no mess. I would rather not see the vent hose come down the front of the motor like it does right now, so i plan on buying some more hose and routing it above the rocker boxes and down behind the trans so it's not visible.

I agree with the others on the Arlen Ness. As you can see from my sig, I went with the Arlen Ness Big Sucker with the Chrome backing plate. The kit comes with everything including a K&N filter. It looks good and works great.

I went ahead and got the stage 1. If it works fine, then great, if not, lesson learned and big sucker it is. BTW, how in the living hell do any of you guys get a fuel pack installed on a new Dyna !? I have wrenched on a LOT of cars and trucks in my life and have never had much trouble. But, this idea of trying to stuff 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag is driving me CRAZY! I still haven't got it in yet.
